Kat Spina's Musical Journey:

The muse is an elusive goddess, any creative person will tell you. An artist can sit for hours, sometimes entire days, at their keyboard or canvas, desperately attempting to invoke the spirit of inspiration—only to be let down by the famously fickle deity, and come up fruitless. It’s true: One can’t control the muse’s visitations, on any given day she either likes you or she doesn’t. But fortunately for lovers of fine contemporary pop the muse likes Kat Spina. A lot. For proof, look no further than the young singer-songwriter’s perfectly titled debut, Engaging the Muse.
Kat may only be in her early twenties, but her songs convey enough storied experience to have many of her more wizened peers nodding in rhythmic approval. Songs like the funky, self-assured opener, “You Haven’t Told Her About Me”; the lazy, loping swinger “Back to You”; the empowering, bass-driven “Stronger Than Before.” These are the songs of a well-traveled romantic survivalist, a woman who still has the long road of life in front of her but already knows how to spin her experiences into songs of gold.
Kat graduated from the State University of New York at New Paltz in 2006, majoring in Music Therapy and Jazz Performance. Quickly she began to revisit Manhattan’s rich music scene, venturing into the city to experience blues, jazz, and singer-songwriters. It wasn’t long before Kat was writing her own songs and playing open mikes. “I was pretty closed up emotionally before I started writing,” she says. “But I really wanted to say something. I’d started keeping the journals that I draw on for my lyrics, and studied jazz/contemporary music for song structure. Listening is essential!”

No limits. For Kat Spina life is filled with the promise of one magical song after another, all waiting to be discovered. She’s got the muse right in the palm of her hand.
